Samsung Releases Jazz Rendition Of Over The Horizon Ringtone

Samsung Over The Horizon Jazz Song

On Thursday, January 23, Samsung Electronics will host its Unpacked event in San Jose where it will unveil its Galaxy S25 series of smartphones.

Ahead of that launch, it has released a new jazz version of its Over the Horizon ringtone.

Samsung first unveiled its Over the Horizon ringtone back in 2011. Every year since, the song has evolved with different renditions and themes to it.

Last year, that theme was executed by a gugak, or traditional Korean music, orchestra. In 2023, the ringtone was interpreted by Korean-born electronic artist Yaeji, while the 2022 edition was remixed by SUGA, a member of the Korean boy band BTS.

The 2025 arrangement was created by Los Angeles-based pianist and composer Jacob Mann, with recording and mastering in Dolby Atmos overseen by engineer Will Kennedy.

Mann infused the piece with the “rhythm of the day,” shaping the composition to reflect the natural progression of time.

“I divided the course of a day into sections to convey the anticipation of tomorrow over the horizon. The music begins with the soft piano melodies of the morning and transitions to the vibrant energy of a night out in the city, featuring instruments like saxophones, brass and trumpets,” he explained behind the scenes.

“Creating this piece felt like playing in a sandbox as a child, giving me the freedom to explore various inspirations on the piano and connect all the sections to flow naturally around the main melody.”

In a behind-the-scenes video, Mann explains that the ringtone essentially comprises of six notes at its core and then builds on that.

“The biggest challenge of this piece was trying to distill an entire day into a 3.5 minute song with a lot of different sections and moods,” said Mann.

Kennedy optimised the sound by strategically placing the microphones to capture an immersive sound experience. In the recording studio, he set up what he called an “Atmos specific microphone array.”

“It’s mirroring what the speaker setup that will be playing this back is. There are 11 microphones in this array, seven facing outward into the room and four facing up towards the ceiling,” he says showing the arrangement of those microphones.

“And in our studio, those will be paired with seven speakers around us and four speakers above us, and the idea is that we’re more accurately capturing the sound of being in this space for playback in Atmos.”
