Samsung, LG Likely To Sign OLED Deal This Quarter

LG Display and Samsung Electronics are close to signing a deal that would see LG’s WOLED panels used in Samsung’s next generation of smart televisions for the first time.

“The two have resumed related talks with an aim to sign a deal by the end of the first half this year,” an industry source told the Korean Herald.

Samsung Electronics will order 200,000 to 300,000 white OLEDs from LG Display, for its 2024 range.

The two giants have been in talks since 2021; discussions cooled in mid 2022 after the pair couldn’t come to an agreement on pricing or the length of the contract period.

Last week, Korean tech publication TheElec quoted a source who revealed the resumption of the talks “has much to do with the changes in the worldwide display sector.”

“Samsung Electronics is now more reliant on Chinese display panel makers that are dominating the LCD sector. Chinese panel makers have since then become less favorable towards Samsung, sources said.”

Samsung stopped production of LCD panels last year. The company currently has three OLED televisions — S95B, S90C and S95C — with the rest of its range LCD.
