Samsung Heir Under Parole Conditions

Samsung heir Lee Jae-yong will be released later tomorrow, but the justice ministry said yesterday that he will be under strict parole conditions.

He must report to the parole office if he plans to move residence or leave the country, among other requirements. He is not eligible for any special considerations and will not be granted any, according to the ministry.

Jae-yong will remain vice chairman of Samsung Electronics Co. but it is not known whether his parole conditions will hamper this yet.

He is being granted parole just eight months into a two-and-a-half year bribery sentence, due to “the country’s economic situation and the conditions of the global economy amid the prolonged COVID-19 pandemic” as well as “social sentiment, and the prisoner‘s behaviour and attitude”, according to the ministry.
