Roku has taken steps to stop illegal content being viewed through its devices.
The company says it will shut down channels it deems are streaming illegal material.
Some individuals are using the ‘private channel’ feature on Roku’s OS to illegally access online streams.
Originally, the feature was built with an intention for developers to test their channels, prior to sending to Roku’s channel store.
As of Roku’s recent crackdown, a ‘warning message‘ will now appear should a user try to create a private channel.
The message states ‘non-certified’/private channels must agree to Roku’s terms which distribute legal content only. The warning also informs that Roku can, and will, “remove the channel without prior notice” if the company determines it violates copyright.
Reports state that Roku’s crackdown is already making waves. Piracy Channel iStreamItAll – previously operating in a legal grey area – has said it will remove support for Roku in 2019.
Roku won’t actively scan for piracy.
