Renowned German Headphone Brand Sold To Chinese
Renowned headphone brand Beyerdynamic whose products are hand made in Germany has been sold for $216M to Chinese Company Cosonic International, at this stage we don’t know what will happen to the local distribution rights.Currently Synchronised Technology are the appointed distributor, with global Managing Director Richard Cambell confirming that manufacturing will continue to be in Germany for the 100-year-old headphone brand which has been family-owned ever since it was founded by Eugen Beyer in Berlin, 1924.
In confirming the that the manufacturing base will stay in Germany he claimed that the brand has a “phenomenal history and legacy in the pro audio space with our headphone technology and microphone technology, this just allows us the opportunity to continue that tradition”.
Currently 85% of Beyerdynamic’s microphones and headphones are still handmade including their famous high-end T1 Gen 3, the DT 700 range, the and the MMX gaming and Amiron wireless range.
Cambell said “Our strategic direction doesn’t change. We have a clear focus on pro audio, consumer and gaming and this will continue to be how we prioritise and look forward.”
He said, “The owners (Of Beyerdynamic) were willing to talk to an interested party, like Cosonic, especially with one that has an audio history”.
Cosonic currently manufactures and supplies various OEM components for a number of audio brands.
Most of Beyerdynamic success has come in the European and US markets as well as in Australia.
One of the main reasons for the acquisition was that the Company wanted to grow but did not have the capital to do this.
Campbell said that the brand’s shareholders recognised that an investment was required “in order to make future investments”.
“The current structure wasn’t able to support that, so to be able to have the backing of an entity that’s able to help us grow and thrive in international markets in a way that’s beyond what we’re doing today – this acquisition gives us that opportunity,” he said.
The acquisition still needs to go through regulatory approval before the deal is finalised.
The brand recently announced two new wired headphones: DT 770 Pro X closed-back and the DT 990 Pro X open-back headphone.
