Pinterest Passes 250 Million-User Mark
Pinterest has announced that it now has over 250 million active users per month, up from 200 million at the same time last year and only 100 million in September 2015. Over 80 per cent of new users are from outside the US, the company said in an announcement.
The web and mobile app company shares information on a wide range of topics, using generally smaller-scale GIFs and videos.
Commenting on the figure, co-founder and chief product officer Evan Sharp said, “Pinners across the globe describe Pinterest as their own positive corner of the internet. It’s where they go to learn about their personal tastes, and get the confidence to try new things.”
He also said that 98 per cent of all Pinners go out and try new things they find on Pinterest, which is way more than the 71 per cent social media platform average, according to a recent Nielsen study he cited.
“Other apps are about connecting with friends and inviting more people to join. Pinterest is your place to reconnect with yourself.”
Over 175 billion pins have been created by the website’s users, representing a huge rise from the corresponding figure of only 100 billion in September last year.
There is speculation that Pinterest is preparing an IPO for some time next year, while Forbes magazine recently stated that the company would double its annual ad revenue to nearly $US1 billion a year in the near future.
