Nike Debuts Limited Edition PlayStation Sneakers

eSports are making their way to the basketball courts with PlayStation’s latest collaboration with Nike and Paul George, with the debut of the Nike PG 2.5 PlayStation Sneakers, available from December 1.

Oklahoma City Thunder star George, an avid gamer, debuted the sneakers in a game against the Golden State Warriors on Wednesday.

This isn’t the first time George has collaborated with Nike and PlayStation, back in February George, Nike, and PlayStation released the PG-2 “PlayStation” colorway sneaker, which was a hit with both basketball fans and gamers.

These sneakers paid homage to the buttons on the DualShock 4 controller, whereas the new Nike PG 2.5 x PlayStation sneakers evoke the colouring of the original PlayStation with its iconic grey colouring, light up tongues, the original four-colour PS logo on the left shoe, and PlayStation symbols from the PS controller.

Unsurprisingly, they are to be released to “select” retailers from December 1, right before the PlayStation Classic mini-console is released — starting at $149.99 from December 3, 2018.

George wrote in a PlayStation blog-post that these sneakers represented a lot to him: “This collaboration is very special and personal to me. I’ve been a PlayStation fan ever since I was kid, so I’m excited about continuing to partner with a brand that I grew up loving.”

Previously, PlayStation and Nike have collaborated with Air Force 1 inspired sneakers, which saw a QuickStrike release at E3 2018 after limited releases in 2006 and 2009.

Obviously, we should not expect the same this year, with PlayStation backing out of E3.

With PlayStation continuously backing out of conventions and secrecy surrounding the potential PS5, perhaps we will see more of these kinds of collaborations in the future to keep the brand in the public’s eye.

Gamers, sneaker-heads, and basketball fans who want to get their hands on a pair of Paul George’s sneakers should keep an eye on Nike’s SNKRS app and they will be available from “select” retailers December 1st rumoured to be priced at US$110.
