In the 12 months to the end of March, Australians spent $15.2 billion on online retail equivalent to 6.6 per cent of total retail spending, according to the index.

Groceries and liquor showed the strongest growth, but department stores and fashion retailers also did well.

Separately in Canberra, the latest retail trade figures from the Australian Bureau of Statistics estimated retail turnover rose 0.1 per cent in March 2014, seasonally adjusted, following a rise of 0.3 per cent in February 2014.

Total online retail trade in March was $532 million, up from $495 million in February and $417.4 million in March last year.

The ABS figures refer only to local online sales; sales placed with overseas-based businesses are not included.
