If you’re rolling with a premium Nvidia GPU and your PC’s performance isn’t up to scratch, a bug in that graphics driver might be the reason.

The current Nvidia drivers contain a bug that increases CPU usage after you exit a game. Nvidia have acknowledged the issue and released a fix that handles increased CPU usage with Nvidia GPUs.

If you haven’t adapted to this yet and you’re using the latest Nvidia drivers, you may notice your PC feeling like it’s stuck in mud after you leave a game – that’s because of the bug.

Users say Nvidia Container keeps using as much as 15 per cent CPU power even once the game has finished. CPU resources shouldn’t be claimed after gaming fun has finished.

If you want to check if you’re being affected, run a game, close it, then open Windows Task Manager and browse the list of processes to find Nvidia Container. If the process is generating CPU usage – generally between 10 and 15 per cent – your PC is affected.

If you have a powerful processor, you might not notice much of a difference in performance, but it is still an unwanted drain on power consumption and your computer in general.

Still, it’s an easy fix. It only occurs in the latest drivers (version 531.18), so you just need to roll back to the 528.49 WHQL driver.

Download the older version direct from Nvidia and uninstall the latest driver. Or, if you feel like sticking to the latest driver, just force Nvidia Container to shut down after you finish a game, or just restart your PC.

Nvidia have pegged this as an “open issue”, so a fix will no doubt come soon in an update, or as a hotfix before the next driver arrives.
