Nintendo Switch 2 Continues to Smash Records
Nintendo’s next-gen console the Switch 2 continues to break records, becoming the fastest-selling gaming hardware in U.S. history.
According to market tracker Circana, Nintendo sold 1.6 million units of the US$450 (A$675) console in the U.S. during its June launch, topping the previous record of 1.1 million set by Sony’s PlayStation 4 in 2013.
The release also fuelled a 249% year-on-year spike in U.S. gaming hardware spending, reaching a record $978 million for the month.
This launch follows the global momentum already established by Switch 2, which sold 3.5 million units worldwide in its first four days.
In Japan, it’s already claimed the title of the fastest-selling console ever, according to Famitsu.

Mario Kart World was the standout launch title, with 82% of U.S. Switch 2 buyers picking it up – either standalone or bundled – making it June’s best-selling game on Nintendo platforms.
While Nintendo’s success has provided a significant lift for the industry, analysts like Circana’s Mat Piscatella caution that early adopters are not always indicative of long-term performance.
“Launch buyers are the most enthusiastic and least price sensitive,” he said, noting that true demand from the broader market will become clearer during the holiday season.
Accessories sales also hit new highs, led by the Switch 2 Pro Controller, which saw a 32% attach rate.
Nintendo’s all-in bet on hybrid hardware appears to be paying off again.
With new titles like Donkey Kong Bananza and Pokémon Legends: Z-A on the way, it remains to be seen whether the Switch 2 can match or exceed its predecessor’s 150 million lifetime sales.
Despite the Switch 2’s success so far, gamers may be waiting until next year before they can easily get their hands on the console, with supply lagging behind its surging demand.
