Apple has launched a new version of the Apple TV 4K, with an identical look but much beefier features.
Much like the new iPad Pro, also released today, Apple has adopted an ‘if it ain’t broke’ approach to the design of the new Apple TV. Even the Siri remote seems identical, although the new model comes with USB-C charging – an obvious and welcome new feature.
The biggest differences are the A15 Bionic processor (seen in the iPhone 14) a huge leap over the 2021 Apple TV’s A12 Bionic chip. The A15 gives a 30 per cent performance bump, with “greater responsiveness, faster navigation, and snappier UI animations”.
On top of the 30 per cent performance bump, the new Apple TV uses “nearly 30 percent less power than the previous generation”, according to Apple.
There’s also a 128GB model, which, unlike the Wi-Fi-only 64GB version, offers an ethernet port. This is an odd choice for Apple, given last year’s 64GB model comes with both Wi-Fi and ethernet. Most people stream rather than download TV content, making this a particularly silly omission.
Support for HDR10+ is the other big boost, especially for those who plan to use the Apple TV for watching TV, as oppose to gaming.
Pricing starts at A$219, which pre-orders starting today. The Apple TV will be available in Australia from November 4.
