Netflix has launched video games on supported TV devices in Australia and 19 other countries, with five party games now available through the Netflix app and control via the Netflix Game Controller mobile app.

Netflix TV video games are playable through the Netflix app in the US, Canada, UK, Spain, Mexico, France, Italy, Poland, Netherlands, Sweden, Belgium, Switzerland, Austria, Ireland, Finland, Germany, South Africa, Australia, and New Zealand, with more countries to follow.

The games appear under a new “Games” tab in the Netflix TV app for supported regions and devices.

Users control games with the Netflix Game Controller app on mobile devices.

Physical game controllers are not yet supported.

Apple TV (tvOS), PlayStation, and Xbox are not compatible platforms.

Five party games are currently available:

  • LEGO Party! – Multiplayer mini-game competition hunting for gold through themed Challenge Zones
  • Boggle Party – Word-finding game for solo or up to eight players
  • Pictionary: Game Night – Fast-paced drawing game based on Mattel’s classic
  • Tetris Time Warp – Time-travel through Tetris eras from 1984 to classic Gameboy
  • Party Crashers: Fool Your Friends – A social deduction game identifying the player without context clues

Dead Man’s Party: A Knives Out Game will join the lineup soon, featuring detective Benoit Blanc in a murder mystery social party game where players star in their own Knives Out mystery and deduce who committed the crime.

Netflix maintains big gaming ambitions despite changing course, closing game studios, and removing many mobile games.

The TV games represent part of this effort, alongside bringing classic Grand Theft Auto titles and Red Dead Redemption to mobile (Android, iPhone, iPad) for the first time.

Netflix stated it has long-term plans for TV gaming but must first build the ecosystem.

Key missing pieces include physical game controller support.

The company did not comment on whether more ambitious games like Grand Theft Auto or Red Dead Redemption might come to TV devices.

Compatible devices include Amazon Fire TV, Chromecast with Google TV, LG smart TVs, Roku devices and TVs, Samsung smart TVs, Sony smart TVs, Nvidia SHIELD TV, TCL smart TVs, Vizio smart TVs, Xfinity 4K devices, and Xumo devices and smart TVs.

Netflix subscriptions in Australia start at A$9.99 monthly for the Basic with Ads plan, with Standard (A$20.99) and Premium (A$28.99) plans also available.

TV gaming is included with all subscription tiers at no additional cost.
