MWC Fast Becoming A ‘None Event’ As Mobile Smartphone Brands Give Show A Miss

Mobile World Congress in Barcelona is fast becoming a non-event for smartphone manufacturers, other than Chinese brands that are predominantly not sold in Australia.

This year’s event being held between the 3rd of March and the 6th is fast becoming more of a telco carrier event with Apple a no show and Samsung having already launched their Galaxy S25 range of smartphones in January.

While Samsung is attending the show no major launches are expected.

The only possibility is that Apple could launch new foldables but that is doubtful.

Samsung has been collaborating with Google on the first Android-based XR headset to compete with the likes of Apple’s Vision Pro, with some observers claiming that the show could be the perfect time to showcase it to the masses.

HMD Global who are struggling to get traction in Australia, is doing an event but not around the show floor with the Company tipped to launch new products as well as new audio products.

Among the Chinese brands Xiaomi has confirmed they will be present at this year’s MWC with the Company set to spruik ‘Connected Intelligence’ or AI with the possibility that the offering could be built around DeepSeek.

Honor has also confirmed its presence at the upcoming trade show.

Oppo Find X8 Pro.

UK smartphone brand Nothing who are also going nowhere in the Australian market after cutting a launch deal with JB Hi Fi, has teased an announcement that coincides with MWC, on 4 March 2025, though it’s not yet clear if the company like the struggling HMD Global will have a presence at the Barcelona-based show itself.

Tipped to be announced is two new models along with an update to its budget-focused range with the potential reveal of the Nothing Phone (3a) collection.

Oppo who are desperately trying to claw back lost market share in Australia hasn’t had much of a presence at MWC over the past few years due to their fight with Nokia over the theft of wireless patents and the fact they were kicked out of several EU retailers due to the dispute.

Like several brands who find a presence at the show officially expensive the Company is hosting an MWC-adjacent event in Barcelona during the week focusing on Oppo’s vision of AI.

Motorola Razr 50.

As for Motorola they have rarely made major announcements at MWC though I am told that they have some kind of presence on the Lenovo stand.

According to IDC sources the Australia market has remained flat with new figures set to be released shortly that reveal that the two growth brands are Motorola and Oppo with Samsung growing less than 1% during the past year.
