MS Sues Justice Department

Microsoft has sued the US Justice Department, saying it’s unconstitutional for the Government to prevent tech companies from telling customers when federal agents have accessed their data.

The suit shows how easily, and secretly, the US Government is able to gain access to individuals’ information in a cloud-computing era.

Critics argue that a person would know if their home or hard drive were searched by investigators, but spooks have the ability to keep silent their searches of information stored in the massive datacentres that power cloud computing.

Microsoft says in its lawsuit that it received 5624 federal demands for customer information in the past 18 months, and half of those came with gag orders.
