McIntosh Gets Into Weight Lifting Business With New Amp

McIntosh whose products are distributed in Australia by Synergy, is getting into the weight lifting business with the launch of a 71 kilo amp that puts out 1,200 watts.

The new offering is the most powerful single-chassis monoblock amplifier yet, the MC1.25KW. Weighing 71kg and capable of 1,200 watts, this beast isn’t for the faint-hearted – and at £29,995 per pair, it’ll dent your pocket as much as your floor.

Australian pricing is set to top $49K.

The Quad Balanced MC1.25KW monoblock amplifier, a replacement for the MC1.2KW, can be used with 2-, 4- or 8-Ohm speakers, courtesy of McIntosh’s Autoformer technology, which delivers the maximum power regardless of the speaker it is partnered with. Audio Autoformer and power transformer are located just behind the front panel, are now contained in new glass-topped enclosures.

The amp features four McIntosh Monogrammed Heatsinks, designed to eliminate thermal equilibrium lag time. No warm-up is required. Other exclusive McIntosh features include Power Guard, Sentry Monitor, Quad Balanced design, Power Control and patented Solid Cinch speaker binding posts. Both balanced and unbalanced outputs are on hand for bi-amping or tri-amping speakers easier; they can also be used to send the audio signal to a secondary system if the preamplifier does not have enough outputs, or to connect a powered subwoofer.

There are also some cosmetic changes from its forebear. New circular glasswork housing the amplifier’s name badge features a decorative trim-ring, while the stainless steel chassis sits on newly redesigned feet, with a chamfered edge.

The MC1.25KW also boasts a fast-responding 27.9 cm blue watt meter, with new direct LED backlighting for improved appearance and colour accuracy.
