MacBook Maker’s Revenue Crashes 40%

COVID-related lockdowns in Shanghai have sent the world’s biggest notebook manufacturer into freefall.

Quanta Computer, the largest manufacturer of MacBooks and a key iPhone producer, have reported that April revenue fell 40 per cent from the previous month, due to the strict lockdown measures. Its Shanghai site is the largest production centre for MacBooks in the world.

Quanta’s year-on-year revenue was also down 21.3 per cent, to A$3.2 billion.

This hit on profits is being reflected throughout the entire Apple supply chain.

Half of Apple’s 200 top suppliers have facilities in and around Shanghai, according to a Nikkei Asia analysis, which is causing chaos.

“The important issue is that we need all kinds of components and modules to build products so any disruptions with our suppliers around the region could affect our production too,” Quanta’s CEO C.C. Leung said.

“We are working hard to resume production, and hope we could gradually recover about 50% of production by mid-May.

“It will definitely pose impacts on notebook shipments for the April-June quarter.”
