In 2022, ChannelNews reported that Buddy Technologies, the company behind LIFX smart light bulbs, had entered receivership and was later sold to a US lighting company following growing customer complaints in Australia. The sale included the LIFX brand and several related subsidiaries, which were acquired by Feit Electric, a US-based business with more than four decades of experience in the lighting industry.

Late last year, LIFX rolled out a new range of smart lighting products in Australia, with its SuperColour collection now available through Beacon Lighting. The launch expands the brand’s presence beyond bulbs, placing a stronger focus on ceiling fixtures and outdoor lighting designed to be both functional and decorative.

At the centre of the range are two new interior fittings, the SuperColour 38 cm Ceiling Light and the SuperColour Recessed Downlight. Both use LIFX’s Polychrome technology, which divides each fitting into multiple controllable lighting zones. This allows users to create colour gradients, adjust white tones from warm to cool, and dim lighting smoothly through the LIFX app or via voice control. Unlike traditional single-colour fixtures, the multi-zone approach is intended to give rooms more depth and flexibility in how light is used throughout the day.

The SuperColour range also extends outdoors, with four new products aimed at gardens, paths, and entertaining areas. The Path Light is designed to guide walkways with customisable colours, while the Spot Light can be used to highlight plants, walls, or architectural details. Neon Flex offers a bendable, continuous light strip suited to edges and decorative accents, and the String Light is positioned as an option for patios, balconies, and outdoor dining spaces.

All of the new products connect through the LIFX app and support voice assistants, alongside compatibility with Matter-enabled smart home systems. This allows users to integrate lighting into broader automation setups, such as schedules, scenes, and routines shared across different smart devices.

The expansion reflects a broader shift in smart lighting, where fittings are increasingly expected to do more than provide basic illumination. By combining colour control, zoning, and outdoor durability, LIFX is targeting homeowners who want lighting to play a more active role in the look and feel of their spaces.

The SuperColour ceiling and outdoor lighting range is available now through Beacon Lighting stores and its online platform across Australia.
