Lenovo has unveiled a new Chromebook Plus 14 laptop, debuting alongside a fresh suite of Google Gemini AI tools exclusive to the upgraded Chromebook Plus range.

The lightweight, Arm-based laptop is now available in Australia from A$649, offering impressive AI smarts and premium features previously reserved for higher-end devices.

The standout addition is Google’s Gemini-powered AI toolset, including ‘select to search’, which lets users long-press the launcher icon or take a screenshot to search on-screen images or text, similar to Circle to Search on Android phones.

Captured text can be instantly added to Google Docs or Calendars, and even technical or jargon-heavy text can be simplified with a tap.

Chromebooks are also getting smarter with tab and document ‘smart grouping’, automatically organising open windows based on your workflow. In the Gallery app, new on-device AI editing functions like background removal and sticker creation bring basic image editing into the OS itself.

Lenovo’s Chromebook Plus 14 is the first Arm-based model in the Plus lineup, powered by a MediaTek Kompanio Ultra processor (50 TOPS), with Wi-Fi 7, up to 16GB of RAM, and optional touchscreen. The 14-inch OLED display (1920 x 1200) shines at 400 nits, and the device weighs just 1.17kg. The 60Wh battery is tipped to offer the best life in the Chromebook Plus range.

Buyers also get a free 12-month subscription to Google’s AI Pro Plan, which includes Gemini 2.5 Pro, Veo 3 AI video generation, and 2TB of cloud storage.

Meanwhile, Google confirmed that Android 10 or later will be required to receive updates, as it phases out support for the ageing Android 8 and 9 versions. Chrome 138 will be the last to support these older OS versions, with Chrome 139 launching in August requiring Android 10 or newer.
