Kwikset is adding NFC tap-to-unlock functionality to its smart lock line, while also introducing a more affordable Matter-based model and a smart garage opener.

The headline product is the Halo Select Plus, due later in 2025.

It retains the Select’s touchscreen keypad, Matter-over-Thread support, and built-in Wi-Fi, but adds NFC, enabling users to open the door by tapping a compatible phone or watch.

Kwikset hasn’t confirmed whether the lock will support Apple’s Home Key, but The Verge reports such support is “likely.”

If confirmed, it would be Kwikset’s first Home Key-compatible product, bringing it in line with premium competitors that already offer tap-to-unlock functionality.

The second new model, based on the Aura Reach, aims to make Matter more accessible and affordable.

It drops Wi-Fi and the touchscreen in favour of Bluetooth plus Matter-over-Thread, adds a proximity-sensing backlit keypad, and leaves out the built-in door sensor. The trade-off is fewer features, but lower cost and better battery life.

Seamless door unlocking seems just around the corner.

Alongside the two locks, Kwikset will ship the Flex, a smart garage opener with app control, HomeLink, Android Auto and CarPlay. Matter support is planned for a later update.

The company’s strategy is to push more of Kwikset’s portfolio onto open standards, such as Matter and, eventually, Aliro.

Aliro is a protocol backed by Apple, Google and Samsung that aims to unify Bluetooth, NFC, and UWB for door access.

Today, Apple is the only major platform with native residential NFC support through Home Key, and relatively few locks work with it.

If Kwikset delivers on the Select Plus, it will broaden access to what many see as the most seamless way to enter a smart home – a simple tap at the door.
