iPhone users are furious about Apple’s Clean Energy feature, which is meant to reduce carbon footprint by only charging when lower carbon-emission electricity is available, as it appears to be increasing charge time.

Clean Energy Charging became an iPhone reality on October 24, with the release of iOS 16.1. The idea is that when the mode is enabled an iPhone connected to a charger gets a report of carbon emissions by the local power grid. That info is then used to determine when to charge the device.

However, users now say their phones are charging a little slower, and speculating it is because of Clean Energy Charging. Some users have hit Twitter trying to find out how to turn the new feature off.

Users have also said Apple shamed them after they did turn off the feature, explaining that the feature helps reduce carbon footprint, or that the battery chemically ages when deactivated.

Apple are currently saying the mode is available in the US and set to be On by default. To turn it off, users need to go into settings and hit “battery”, “battery health & charging”, then turn off “Clean Energy Charging”.
