Chinese imaging specialist Insta360 has launched its latest ultra-compact action camera, the GO Ultra, a pocket-sized device that weighs just 53 grams yet shoots 4K video at 60fps.

The GO Ultra represents a major leap over the company’s previous GO 3S, with Insta360 calling it a new product tier rather than a straight replacement.

At the heart of the Ultra is a much larger 1/1.28-inch sensor – more than double the size of its predecessor – paired with a new 5nm AI chip that delivers sharper video, improved HDR, and stronger low-light performance.

A new “PureVideo” mode uses AI to reduce noise and boost brightness when filming in dark environments.

The form factor remains wearable and highly portable.

The standalone camera, roughly the size of a smartwatch, can magnetically clip to clothing or mounts for hands-free POV footage. It’s also IPX8-rated waterproof to 10 metres, making it suitable for surfing, snorkelling or mounting to a BMX for downhill runs.

Battery performance is another standout for the GO Ultra.

The camera runs for 70 minutes on its own or up to 200 minutes with the optional Action Pod, which also adds a 2.5-inch flip touchscreen. When power runs low, fast charging restores 80% in just 12 minutes.

Unlike the GO 3S, the new model also introduces removable storage, supporting microSD cards up to 2TB – a big win for creators who prefer swapping cards over file transfers.

The upgraded Insta360 app has also been refreshed with AI tools that can auto-edit clips with effects, music and transitions. Cyclists can sync GPS, heart rate and speed data from Strava, while families can use the new AI Family Moments feature to automatically compile highlight reels.

Available now via the Insta360 store, Amazon and select retailers, the GO Ultra Standard Bundle is priced at US$449.99 (A$690) and comes in black or white, with key accessories included.

The Insta360 GO Ultra offers a rare mix of portability, durability and cinematic image quality – making it a strong rival to GoPro in the wearable camera space.
