Huawei Developing 5G Foldable Smartphone
Huawei is the latest smartphone manufacturer to announce that they are working on a foldable smartphone, however, they are combining theirs with another trending technology: 5G.
In an interview with Digital Trends, Huawei CEO Richard Yu confirmed that they are working on this new venture: “We are working on foldable phones,” Yu said. Foldable 5G phones.”
We have known for a while that Huawei is attempting to beat rival Samsung to the foldable smartphone finish line, with Yu quoted saying “we are already working on it. You will not even have to wait another year.”
Even if Samsung beat them there this is the first news that Huawei’s phone will be 5G. rumoured to arrive in 2019, or that globally the industry is racing to roll out 5G for 2019, but it’s the first time the two buzz-worthy technologies have been linked in Huawei’s plans.
Huawei has also developed their own chip, the Balong 5G01, that is designed to support the new 3GPP standard for 5G networks, so it was inevitable that their future models would include 5G capabilities.
We previously reported that Samsung’s foldable phone will be similar to a tablet when unfolded and then folds into a phone for easier portability. It’s possible that Huawei’s 7.2-inch Mate 20 X could be a preview of what the so far unnamed foldable 5G phone could be like, a notion which Digital Trends alluded to in their reporting.
