Government Thumbs-Down On New HQ: Google May Abandon Sydney

A NSW Government decision to reject the planned building of a Silicon Valley-style technology hub in Sydney could put as many as 19,000 jobs at risk. Hardest hit will be Google, which had planned to establish its headquarters within the development.

The tech hub was to be part of a project to revive old railyards near the inner-city suburb of Redfern. But it seems the planned development submitted by Mirvac failed to meet stringent requirements laid down by the ultra-conservative NSW Cabinet’s infrastructure committee.

It’s a major blow for the local tech industry which for some time has been searching for a central hub in Sydney where start-ups and legacy tech companies could work side by side.

There are now concerns that Google could abandon Sydney and move to another city – Melbourne, perhaps, or even the Gold Coast …

Google had moved into the old Fairfax premises in Sydney’s Darling Harbour at the beginning of this year, but this was seen as only a stop-gap measure until the planned new Redfern HQ was completed.

It now looks as though Google will have to extend the lease – or find new premises elsewhere.
