Google Slash Laptop & Tablet Teams
Google has reportedly scaled back the size of its laptop and tablet teams, fuelling rumours the tech giant is re-strategising its Pixel hardware portfolio.
Reported by Business Insider, Google has informed dozens of engineers, product managers and technical staff to accept new projects internally, or within Alphabet citing “roadmap cutbacks.”
The restructuring is said to have affected Google’s “Create” team, which develops several ‘Made by Google’ products including Pixelbook laptops and Pixel Slate tablets.
The cutbacks have affected several pipeline projects, with sources reportedly claiming it’s “pared down the portfolio.”
Several “floating” employees are said to have moved to Google’s Pixel smartphone division.
The news comes amid a sluggish global PC market, with commentators admitting Google has failed significantly dent the dominance of Apple’s iPad and Mac line-up.
According to Taiwanese trade publication, DigiTimes, global tablet shipments have continued to climb, with notching 44.89 million units in the Q3Y18 – up 6.1% YoY.
