Global Tablet And Chromebook Shipments Down In 2022 Q3, Reports IDC
The third quarter of 2022 marks a worldwide decline in tablet and Chromebook shipments, as reported by the International Data Corporation (IDC).
After lowering global smartphone shipments, IDC noted a decline in tablet shipments by a concerning 8.8 percent. OEMs shipped 38.6 million units between July to September compared to 42.4 million units in the same period last year.
The total shipments in this quarter have also fallen compared to 40.4 million in Q2,2022.
Alongside tablets, Chromebooks have also recorded a negative growth with shipments falling 34.4 percent year-on-year as well as previous quarter to 4.3 million units.

“With economic headwinds gaining speed, we expect worsening consumer sentiment to result in further consumer market contractions over the next six quarters,” said Linn Huang, research vice president, Devices & Displays.
“Economic recovery in time for the next major refresh cycle could propel some growth in the outer years of our forecast. Though volumes won’t hit pandemic peaks, we expect the consumer market to drive towards more premium ends of the market.”
In the tablet category, Apple continued to lead the industry with a 37.5 percent market share. However, shipments declined 1.1 percent to 14.5 million units year-on-year. Moreover, iPhone production disruptions at the largest iPhone assembly factory in China spells disruptions in the production process of iPads too.
Samsung came second with an 18.4 percent market share with 7.1 million units shipped. Amazon’s Kindle bagged the third spot with 4.3 million shipments and a 11.1 percent market share. Lenovo and Huawei took the fourth and fifth spots with 2.7 million and 2.4 million shipments respectively, with decrease in shipments for both companies.
As for Chromebooks, Acer overtook Dell for the top spot with 23.9 percent market share and 1 million shipments. Dell and HP came second and third with 0.9 and 0.8 million units sold respectively. Lenovo and Samsung completed the list of top five.
