Facebook Dumps Trending Topics After Bias News Backlash

Social media giant Facebook will be ditching its trending topics feature after backlash from conservatives claiming it would only show liberal based news.

This can be seen usually on the right-hand side of a user’s newsfeed showing the top stories for the day which are personalised depending on what someone is interested in

In post the social media company explains the reason for the removal, ‘it was only available in five countries and accounted for less than 1.5 per cent of clicks to news publishers on average. From research we found that over time people found the product to be less and less useful.

‘We will remove Trending from Facebook next week and we will also remove products and third-party partner integrations that rely on the Trends API.’

Facebook says the feature was introduced in 2014 ‘as a way to help people discover news topics that were popular across the Facebook community’.
