The much-heralded new Motorola Edge 40 Pro is being talked about as a device that can take on Samsung’s Galaxy S23 and Google’s Pixel 7. The bad news is the device, which overseas journalists have described as “impressive”, will not be launched in Australia, according to Motorola management.
ChannelNews understands the stumbling block is retailers and carriers who are happy with the current status quo at the top end of the market.
This is despite consumers turning off purchasing high-risk Chinese smartphone products from the likes of Oppo and Vivo.
The Edge 40 Pro, is a global version of the X40 it released in China at the end of last year.
It comes with a Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset, a 6.67-inch display with up to 165Hz refresh rate, and an IP68 rating for weather and dust resistance.
The device will be released in Europe and Latin America shortly. The retail price will be around $1,400.
The Edge 40 Pro features Gorilla Glass on the front and back, along with aluminium rails which has been described as “Pretty serious flagship stuff.” by The Verge.
ChannelNews understands Motorola is still negotiating with US carriers and retailers, with the device tipped to be launched in the US shortly.
In addition to a proper IP68 rating, which last year’s Edge Plus didn’t offer, the new Motorola device includes 12GB of RAM, a 50-megapixel main camera with optical stabilisation, very fast 125W wired charging, and 15W wireless charging.
There’s a 12-megapixel, 2x “portrait” telephoto camera, which is another improvement over the Edge Plus.
