Samsung Galaxy S5: Eye Controls?
|A phone you can unlock with your eyes? No this isn’t Star Trek.
Samsung are “studying the possibility” of using iris scanning technology in its next ‘hero’ phone, Galaxy S5, meaning users can unlock the screen by just looking at it.
The technology may allow up to five users registered on one device, say sources from CES 2014 in Las Vegas. The technology is in the same vein as fingerprint scanning technology found in the iPhone 5s.
The Korean mobile giant is planning a radical redesign of its fifth generation Galaxy S premium model, as it looks to fend off increasing competition from Apple iPhone 5s and low cost Androids from China.
Galaxy S5 may be unveiled at World Mobile Congress, taking place at the end of February 2014.
A redesigned Galaxy Gear smartwatch will also be released alongside the new S5.
“We’ve been announcing our first flagship model in the first half of each year, around March and April, and we are still targeting for release around that time,” Exec VP Samsung mobile, Lee Young Hee told Bloomberg.
Samsung mobile exec also admitted consumers didn’t feel much of a difference between the S3 and S4.
“For the S5, we will go back to the basics. Mostly, it’s about the display and the feel of the cover,” she said.
“When we release our S5 device, you can also expect a Gear successor with more advanced functions, and the bulky design will also be improved.”
Samsung are also promising another wearable device to be released this year but failed to disclose any further details, along with a redesign of Galaxy Gear smartwatch.
|The news comes as Samsung’s latest financials, out this week, show profit growth has slowed in the face of intense competition from Apple and low cost Chinese vendors.
SamMobile reports Galaxy S5 will have: a QHD (2,560X1,440) 2K display, a Snapdragon 800 processor/64-bit Exynos processor, 3GB/4GB of RAM, and its most powerful ever camera: 16-megapixel.
It will run Google Android 4.4 KitKat and may also have a metal construction.
