A class action lawsuit against Apple has seen the company agree to pay over $72 million AUD ($50 million USD) for faulty MacBook laptop keyboards.
The lawsuit saw customers claim that the ‘Butterfly’ keyboards fitted to MacBook, MacBook Air and MacBook Pro laptops were knowingly prone to issues such as sticky and unresponsive keys, and eventual failure. Customers claimed that the issue was concealed by the Cupertino based tech company.
The claim also stated that Apple’s service wasn’t up to scratch, as the company would repair devices with replacement keyboards that had the same issues.
Despite agreeing to settle, Apple has denied wrongdoing. Customers who bought affected models between 2015 and 2019 in several US states can expect payouts of up to $395 USD for those who had multiple keyboards replaced, $125 USD for those who replaced one and $50 for those who replaced keycaps. In addition, eligible customers have access to four years of free keyboard repairs following their purchases.
