The new range of OLED TVs is set to be revealed at CES 2012 along with an expanded range of Smart TVs that include dual core ARM processors which will deliver faster web access for content delivery. Earlier this month LG said that it will launch a 55-inch OLED television in 2012 with anlysts now tipping a head on fight between the two Korean giants to get their new OLED products to market in time for the London Olympics which are tipped to be a big TV attraction. LG Display CEO Kwon Young-soo originally said that the new OLED TV’s would be launched in the second half of the year, missing London 2012, however the entry of Samsung into the OLED market has changed their “thinking” according to sources. LG has said that that its production run of large-scren OLED TVs will be low, and prices will high with some tipping a $2,000 premium for the technology. Research firm DisplayBank says that the AMOLED market will grow from about $1.4 billion in 2010 to $12.8 billion in 2015. The growth will be led by small and medium AMOLED panels – and production technology will become more stable. OLED TV shipments, starting in 2012, will also help the market exhibit fast growth rates. Samsung Electronics says that it plans to launch products with flexible OLED panels next year, probably starting with mobile phones, then followed by tablets and other portable devices. The company is actually hoping to introduce the products in the “earlier part of 2012”. Samsung’s flexible AMOLEDs will be fabricated on a plastic (Polymide) substrate and will be able to withstand high temperature (up to 350-400 degrees). The displays can be bendable – but we assume that the first products will use them inside rigid glass cases – so it’ll actually be “curved” displays and not flexible ones. |
