| Amazon has gone down under, opening the Australian Kindle Store, offering over 2 million eBooks including best sellers, local titles from Germaine Greer and Tim Winton, 400,000 Kindle-exclusives, children’s and young adult books and comics.
The store will sell in Aussie dollars.
The Internet powerhouse is also unleashing the new Kindle Fire HD, Fire HDX tablets, and Kindle Paperwhite at Dick Smith and Big W, locally.
Kindle Fire HD is on sale today from A$189 at both stores.
The Aussie Kindle Store is integrated with the new Kindle Paperwhite, Fire HD and Fire HDX, and searches for a book directly from the devices.
The new Fire tablets have excellent HDX screens (339ppi for 8.9″), quad-core Snapdragon 800 processor running at a mighty 2.2 GHz, up to 11 hours battery life (17 hr reading), dual speakers with Dolby audio, Full HD video, Wi-Fi, and 2GB RAM. It runs Fire 3.0, which starts with Android but has Amazon content ecosystem-millions of apps, games and books, and cloud storage.
“Millions of Australians are already Kindle customers, and we’re delighted to make it even easier for them to enjoy the Kindle experience,” said Neil Lindsay, Vice President, Amazon Kindle.
“The new Kindle Store is customised for Australian customers, with local best sellers and curated lists relevant to Australians, and many titles from local publishers and authors such as Tim Winton, Karly Lane and Kate Morton.”
The Kindle reading app will be available on Telstra’s Android devices.
The 7″ Kindle Fire HDX will be on sale November 26 $329, 8.9″ Fire HDX is avialble on December 10 for $479.
Amazon’s Kindle Paperwhite is priced at AU$159.

| The new Australian Kindle Store offers over 26,000 free titles; best sellers such as At the Close of Play by Ricky Ponting, Eyrie by Tim Winton, Bittersweet by Colleen McCullough; Diary of a Wimpy Kid; Hungry Campers Cookbook by Katy Holder; and titles from Indigenous publishing house Magabala books.
There are 700,000 books priced at A$3.99 or less and 1.4 million for A$9.99 or less.
Amazon today announced that independent authors and publishers are now able to make their books available and earn a 70% royalty in the local Kindle Store.
