Google has released firmware update 4.467 for the Pixel Buds Pro 2, adding Adaptive Audio, gesture controls, and enhanced Gemini Live integration, features first teased at the Made by Google event in August.

The update, which takes approximately 20 minutes to download and install, brings capabilities previously exclusive to more expensive competitors while introducing unique hands-free controls through head movements.

The Pixel Buds Pro 2 now feature Adaptive Audio within the Active Noise Control section of the Pixel Buds app.

This ANC mode automatically adjusts volume based on the surrounding environment, balancing between audio content and ambient awareness.

A new Loud Noise Protection feature detects and reduces sudden loud noises like sirens or construction sounds.

While these features already exist in Apple’s AirPods Pro ($399), they represent significant additions to the Pixel Buds Pro 2, which retail for $379 in Australia.

The update introduces gesture controls allowing users to:

Nod head to answer calls or start text dictation

Shake head to decline calls or dismiss texts

These controls enable truly hands-free operation, particularly useful when hands are occupied or dirty, distinguishing the Pixel Buds Pro 2 from competitors that rely solely on touch or voice controls.

For Gemini Live users, advanced audio processing now prioritises voice input while eliminating background noise in noisy environments.

This improvement makes Google’s AI assistant more reliable in challenging acoustic conditions like public transport or busy streets.

At $379, the Pixel Buds Pro 2 now offer features approaching Apple’s AirPods Pro ($399) and Sony WF-1000XM5 ($429), while undercutting both on price.

The gesture controls provide unique functionality not currently available from major competitors.

The gradual rollout means not all users will receive the update immediately.

Users can check for updates through the Pixel Buds app, which will prompt installation when available.

The update addresses previous criticisms that the Pixel Buds Pro 2 lacked advanced features despite the “Pro” designation.

With Adaptive Audio and gesture controls, Google’s earbuds now compete more directly with premium offerings while maintaining a price advantage.

For Australian consumers, the Pixel Buds Pro 2 at $379 represent increasingly compelling value, especially for Android users already invested in Google’s ecosystem.

The combination of adaptive noise control, gesture controls, and Gemini integration creates a feature set unavailable at this price point from other major brands.

The 4.467 update is rolling out gradually to all Pixel Buds Pro 2 users globally, with no additional cost for existing owners.
