Apple Granted Flip Phone Patent
On Tuesday last week, Apple won 57 patents which includes one for a multi-layered flip phone.
The Cupertino giant was granted the patent by the US Patent & Trademark Office for a protective crack-resistant cover layer structure for future foldable devices to correct display cracking issues found on devices such as an iPhone (flip phone), iPad (hybrid laptop), Macs and TV.
The patent may be implemented in curved, flexible, conformable and foldable display modules and panels. This could be useful especially for foldables that have a tendency to crack easily.
Apple is engineering a hardcoat layer with a thickness range of 1-200 μm to prevent glass cracks that originate from micro-cracks, the patent explained.
The electronic device would also comprise a smudge resistant coating on the exterior of the hardcoat layer.
The project would be led by the iPhone maker’s team of inventors such as Nikhil Kalyankar as the Lead Technologist and Paul Drzaic, Director of Display Investigations, among others.
The series of granted patents also include an Apple Watch Digital Crown to measure ECG.
