Apple Whacked With $26M Fine By Russia
In a series of multi-million dollar fines, Apple has now been slapped with a $26 million fine in Russia by the nation’s federal anti monopoly service (FAS) for breaching the country’s market competition rules.
The regulator said that it had previously found that Apple forced Russian developers to use Apple’s payment services with the iOS App Store, in violation of Russia’s competition rules.

As per App Store rules, iOS app developers were prohibited from informing in-app customers about “the possibility to pay for purchases outside of the App Store, as well as from using alternative payment methods,” said an official statement.
FAS ruled that Apple was taking advantage of its market dominance in the region.
The regulator made a similar ruling last July against Google last year, imposing a fine of $50 million on the company.
Its unclear how Russia will enforce this fine since Apple has announced its withdrawal from the country following the Ukraine invasion.
Meanwhile, Brazil’s antitrust watchdog Cade has started an investigation into Apple for alleged abuse of a dominant position, following a complaint by Latin America’s e-commerce and fintech giant MercadoLibre.
The company filed complaints in Brazil and Mexico alleging Apple is violating anti-competitive practices by prohibiting third-parties from distributing digital goods on iOS apps and leading to higher prices.
