Apple’s plans to release the next generation of its more affordable, entry-level iPad are reportedly on hold for another year. 

Apple’s latest iPad rollout plan focuses on premium models, leaving its cheaper iPad to launch next year. The iPad mini with new OLED display is widely reported to launch in October 2026, with the other models expected to follow in 2027.

The entry-level iPad has historically been an important product for Apple, targeting value-conscious consumers, students and families who want to access the tablet at a lower price point. Notably, the current lower-cost iPad lacks support for Apple Intelligence features that are available on the tech giant’s newer devices. 

As newer AI features require more advanced hardware capabilities, industry observers note the challenge for Apple is in balancing affordability with its push toward AI-enabled devices. 

While the release delay on the entry-level iPad could see tablets from other brands grow in appeal to some consumers, it may be worth the wait. There are reports the base iPad will gain an upgrade from the current A16 chip to an A19 processor with the next refresh. This would finally bring support for Apple Intelligence, making it the last iPad in Apple’s tablet lineup to gain access to its AI capabilities.

The new iPad Pro is also expected in early 2027, though there are no significant design changes currently rumoured.Â
