Apple To Let Customers Repair Own MacBooks
Apple has announced that it is expanding its Self Service Repair Program to MacBooks.
Apple first launched it’s iPhone Self Service Repair Program in November last year, allowing users to fix their own iPhone 12, SE and 13 devices.
The expanded services will first apply exclusively to M1 powered MacBooks, such as the M1 MacBook Pro 13 and M1 MacBook Air.
To access the Apple Self Service Repair Store to purchase parts and tools, users will first need to review a repair manual, ensuring that they are capable of repairing the device.
The parts and tools provided on the store are “many of the same parts and tools available to Apple Store locations and Apple Authorized Service Providers,” says the company.

Currently, those with Intel powered or the new M2 powered MacBooks are excluded from the new service.
One of the main benefits of self-repair services, other than lower costs for consumers is a reduction in the number of discarded electronics. Microsoft launched a program with the environmental organization As You Sow with this goal in mind.
Samsung also launched their own smartphone repair program in March.
Whilst Apple is usually quite slow to adapt to changes in legislation, such as their move to USB-C only as a result of new laws in Europe, Apple is racing ahead of law makers alongside other major tech giants.
There is an increased push for a ‘Right To Repair’ in the US, with legislation first passed in New York in June, and other states looking to follow.
The new MacBook service is currently exclusive to the US, but may roll out internationally in the future.
