Apple’s news driver, Steve Dowling, is in the news himself, following his announcement that he will leave the iPhone maker after 16 years as head of public relations.

In his long tenure, Dowling has been responsible for Apple’s messaging to the press, iPhone launch events and internal communications during Apple CEO Tim Cook’s time at the helm of the iconic tech company.

Apple watchers will be hoping Dowling will write the definitive book on Apple under Cook, although the low-key executive hasn’t hinted at what his next move will be.

Before leaving, Dowling dutifully distributed what could be his last press release – about plans to use recycled rare earth materials in key iPhone components.

Apple will use recycled rare earths from an outside supplier, not from previously used iPhones.

Apple is also continuing its battle with the EU in a bid to avoid a US$14 billion Irish tax bill. Appealing against the tax claim, Apple has accused the European Commission of misunderstanding its business. The case could take years to resolve.
