Apple is preparing a major screen overhaul, with plans to introduce OLED displays to the iPad mini, iPad Air and MacBook Air over the next few years, though it will come with a price hike.

According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, the iPad mini will be the first to make the leap, with an OLED-equipped model expected to debut in 2026.

The upgrade will deliver richer colours, deeper blacks and improved contrast compared to current LCD panels, with a price increase of up to US$100 (A$150).

The new iPad mini may also feature a redesigned, water-resistant casing and a new speaker system that eliminates traditional speaker holes.

Apple is said to be exploring vibration-based audio technology that could further enhance durability and design.

The shift to OLED continues Apple’s steady move away from LCD technology.

The company first adopted OLED on the Apple Watch in 2015, followed by the iPhone X in 2017, and more recently the iPad Pro in 2024.

The transition brings thinner designs, better energy efficiency and improved visual performance, which are benefits already seen on rival devices like Samsung’s Galaxy Tab S series.

The iPad Air will follow suit later in the decade.

While the next model, due in 2026, is expected to retain an LCD panel, a subsequent generation will adopt OLED as part of Apple’s broader premium push. The entry-level iPad will remain LCD-only for now.

Meanwhile, Apple is also developing an OLED version of the MacBook Air, though insiders suggest it won’t arrive before 2028.

The MacBook Pro will lead the charge for Macs, potentially gaining an OLED touchscreen model as early as 2026.
