Apple is reportedly developing a new iPhone feature that would allow users to divide restaurant bills and shared expenses directly through its own apps.

The planned service would let users take a photo of a receipt, allocate individual items to different people and create payment requests. It is expected to work through Wallet and Messages, with payments connected to Apple Cash. Users may also be able to approve requests from an Apple Watch.

The feature is likely to be announced at Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference and included in iOS 27, according to people familiar with the plans. Apple has not commented publicly.

The tool would expand Apple’s role in everyday payments, building on Apple Pay, Apple Card, Apple Cash and tap-to-pay services for businesses. It would also put the company in closer competition with bill-splitting services such as Splitwise, Tab and Settle Up, as well as peer-to-peer payment platforms including Venmo and Cash App.

The system is expected to calculate each person’s share of a bill, including items, tax and tip. Apple is also said to be working on a separate Wallet feature that would let users create digital passes for events, gyms and other uses.

The update comes as Apple prepares wider software changes focused on artificial intelligence, Siri improvements, photo editing tools and performance upgrades.
