Apple are reportedly developing an OLED panel without a polarizer, a panel that is therefore perfect for a foldable screen.

Korean tech publication TheElec heard from sources close to the matter that Apple were developing the ‘polarizer-less’ OLED panel. Polarizers improve display visibility by only allowing light to enter in certain directions, similar to polarized glasses. The removal of the polarizer allows for a thinner panel, which is optimal for a foldable screen.

The first OLED panel without a polarizer was developed by Samsung for the Galaxy Z Fold 3. Due to the rising success of foldable smart devices over the last few years, it would make sense that Apple would seek to capitalize on the market. Further adding to the speculation of a foldable iPhone is the fact that Apple patented the idea late last year.

Analysts say that a foldable Apple iPhone would be due for release in 2025.
