Apple has apologised to owners of its new MacBook Pro, admitting a software bug significantly reduced performance power once pushed to max processing.
Sparked by tech YouTuber, David Lee, Apple has acknowledged an internal system component – which regulates laptop temperature – mistakenly dropped processing power to base level.
In his video published July 18th, Mr Lee claims the new MacBook Pro (with i9 processor) would not deliver benchmark level performance, unless placed in a freezer.
Referred to as ‘thermal throttling’ the feature claims to prevent overheating by reducing processing power – Lee claims the new MacBook’s performance dropped below 2017 models.
The manoeuvre has been dubbed a PR debacle by some analysts, with Apple’s new MacBook Pro marketed its most powerful yet.
“This degree of thermal throttling is not acceptable,” states Lee in his video (below).
“This is not something that Apple should put out on the market.”

Several Reddit users have taken to social media to express their dismay, with many reportedly returning the device.
Speaking to The Verge, Apple claims the macOS High Sierra 10.13.6 Supplemental Update will rectify issues, delivering a 70% boost to the new 15″ MacBook Pro, and double performance for the 13″ MacBook Pro with Touch Bar – ie. matching the results on Apple’s website.
