Jay Blahnik, Apple’s vice president of fitness technologies, has been accused by current and former staff of fostering a toxic workplace in a recent New York Times (NYT) article.

Nine people who worked with or for Blahnik alleged he could be verbally abusive, manipulative and inappropriate.

About a tenth of his roughly 100-person division has reportedly taken extended health or medical leave since 2022.

One former Apple Fitness+ employee, Kayla Desautels, told the NYT that she had “never worked anywhere more toxic”.

The NYT claims Apple previously settled a complaint accusing Blahnik of sexual harassment. Apple is now defending Blahnik against a separate suit filed by former employee Mandana Mofidi, who alleges bullying and retaliation.

In Apple’s court filings, the company denies harassment, discrimination or retaliation.

Apple says Mofidi received constructive feedback over performance issues. The company is currently aggressively defending Blahnik.

“We strongly disagree with the premise of this story, and there are many inaccurate claims and mischaracterisations,” an Apple spokesperson said. “We will continue to share the facts through the legal process.”

Blahnik hasn’t responded to media requests for comment.

Harrassment and bullying allegations are off-brand for Apple

The fitness guru, who joined Apple in 2013, is best known for shaping the Apple Watch’s ‘Close Your Rings’ feature and leading Apple Fitness+, which he helped launch five years ago.

Allegations of workplace bullying and harassment aren’t good for any business. But they may be especially damaging for a brand that has long sought to associate itself with wellbeing and inclusivity.

The Mofidi case is slated for trial in 2027, meaning discovery and depositions could surface more disturbing details about Blahnik’s behaviour long before a verdict is delivered.

For now, Mofidi’s allegations remain only allegations. Apple’s denial is categorical, and its internal investigation reportedly cleared Blahnik.

But it’s entirely possible there could soon be some significant changes at Apple Fitness+.
