ANZ Hails Apple Pay-Off

Two months after signing to provide Apple Pay to its clients, ANZ Bank says the deal is prompting more customers to open ANZ accounts.

ANZ became the first – and so far only – major bank to offer Apple Pay in late April; the others are hanging back because of having to pay Apple part of the bank fees they would otherwise receive in total.

Matt Boss, ANZ’s MD of products and marketing, told Fairfax Media the bank had experienced an annualised growth rate of more than 60 percent in digital sales of transaction accounts during May, and Apple Pay was playing a “huge part” in the growth.

Noting that ANZ expects to lift its customer numbers by 200,000 this year, Boss added: “We’re seeing people that haven’t been active with us load up their card to Apple Pay, and start becoming active customers again.”
