Amazon Begins Free Same-Day Deliveries for Sydney Prime Members
Sydney has become the first Australian city where Amazon Australia has launched its Free Same-Day Delivery service for Prime members.
Amazon says that the new service covers more than 90 per cent of the city’s population, and is available for on eligible orders over A$49.
Customers can place orders as late as midday for delivery before 10pm that same day.
There are over a million products eligible for same-day deliveries across categories spanning everyday essentials, electronics, toys, clothes and shoes, among others.
Amazon has labelled products eligible for this service with ‘Today by 10pm’ or the ‘Prime Same-Day’ badge on the product’s detail page.
“A report shows that faster online delivery times are estimated to have provided nearly $350 million of value to Australian consumers through improved convenience and time-saved over the past decade,” said Janet Menzies, Country Manager for Amazon Australia.
To promote its newest offering, Amazon has enlisted Mitch Starc as its “Chief Speed Officer”. Starc will also be making special deliveries to select Sydneysiders. To stand a chance to see Starc at their doorstep, customers need to head to Amazon Australia’s Instagram page and share a cricket chant highlighting why they deserve a delivery from Starc.
While Amazon Australia hasn’t revealed specific plans of which cities it plans to expand this service to next including timelines, it has hinted that it will do so by adding that it will “expand product selection and delivery areas.”
Earlier this year, Amazon expanded its free Prime one-day delivery service to Brisbane and other select regional centres across the country. That free service is also available in Geelong, Gosford, Newcastle and Wollongong. Residents in these areas do not need to pay for Express Post for next-day deliveries.
Amazon has invested more than $15 billion in its Australian operations, and is spending another $1.6 billion on five new fulfilment centres — which will be spread across NSW, Victoria and Queensland, and be operational by 2026, employing 4500 people. A new fulfilment centre at Craigieburn in Melbourne’s north is expected to be completed by next year.
Amazon Australia has grown its annual customer base by 1.1 million people over the 12 months to June 2024, according data by Roy Morgan. The research suggests that 7.9 million Australians aged 14+ shop on Amazon at least once a year, up from 6.8 million in the year to June 2023.
