Google’s plans to combine Android and ChromeOS into a single operating system have gained clarity through a job listing for “Aluminium OS,” described as “a new operating system built with Artificial Intelligence (AI) at the core.”

Android Authority first reported on the two-month-old job listing, recently spotted before being taken offline.

The listing provides a name, or likely codename, to Google’s new operating system along with the initialism “ALOS.”

It specifically describes Aluminium as “Android-based,” with Google targeting entry-level, mass market, and premium hardware for the OS.

ChromeOS won’t disappear entirely at first.

According to the listing, the team will create “a portfolio of ChromeOS and Aluminium Operating System” devices across various form factors, including laptops, detachables, tablets, and boxes, at different price points.

However, the ad mentions creating a strategy to “transit Google from ChromeOS to Aluminium,” suggesting the eventual plan is phasing out ChromeOS and replacing it with the Android alternative.

The name is noteworthy for using British spelling ending in “-ium,” possibly nodding to Chromium, the open-source code underlying ChromeOS.

Google has considered bringing Android to PCs for over a decade, but has discussed the prospect more seriously in recent years.

Android Authority reported new plans were in development last year, and Android head Sameer Samat has since confirmed the company is “combining Chrome OS and Android into a single platform,” with plans to release it next year.
