iOS 8.0.2 Update Worked For Us
As we reported earlier this morning, Apple has released its iOS 8.0.2 updated little more than 24 hours after initially pulling the 8.0.1 update due to unexpected issues that particular update caused to cellular connectivity and the Touch ID fingerprint scanner.
Apple’s statement on the new update said:
“iOS 8.0.2 is now available for users, it fixes an issue that affected iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus users who downloaded iOS 8.0.1, and includes improvements and bug fixes originally in iOS 8.0.1. We apologize for inconveniencing the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus users who were impacted by the bug in iOS 8.0.1.”
We took Apple at its word and, after writing up the story, downloaded the update to an iPhone 6 and an iPhone 6 Plus.
As we were downloading and updating, we came across a story at News.com.au claiming the new update still caused issues.
News.com.au said: “Apple has released the iOS 8.0.2 update to fix yesterday’s problems. However, after testing the update on our iPhone 6 Plus, it appears everything is still broken. The phone won’t connect to our mobile network, Touch ID is still broken and our keyboard is now acting up. It does seem some users are reporting success though, while others are experiencing the same results as us.”
The media outlet followed it up with the warning to: “Update at your own risk”, with the rest of its article explaining how to go from iOS 8.0.1 back to iOS 8.
So, with some trepidation, we wondered what would happen when the updates on both phones downloaded, verified themselves with Apple, and installed themselves.
When the moment of truth came a few minutes alter, both phones worked just fine – we made several test calls, we turn the iPhones on and off and used Touch ID without issue.
It’s important to note that when you turn your Touch ID equipped iPhone off, it always asks you to enter in your password as an additional security measure, so if anyone sees that and thinks it is a bug – it isn’t and has been this way since the iPhone 5s was launched around a year ago.
We also had one of our staff members with an iPhone 6 Plus who downloaded and installed the update, and his iPhone is working just fine, too.
We do wonder whether some iOS 8.0.1 owners might have needed to downgrade to iOS 8 first, but given the fact that Apple hadn’t specified this as an necessity, we don’t know why others say they’re still experiencing issues.
Thus, we are very happy to have had the update install smoothly and without problems, and we genuinely hope that’s the case for everyone else, too.
We’ll see over the next 24-48 hours whether there really is a problem with 8.0.1 updaters going to 8.0.2. If it’s true there might be an 8.0.3 in short order, but for the time being, we can definitively confirm it has worked without issue on three different iPhone 6-class devices in this office.
