PC Sales To Drop 4.9pc: IDC

Stocking up on product by PC sellers in the last three months of last year will also contribute to the downturn, it says, noting that the sellers were boosting inventory before Microsoft scaled back subsidies earlier this year.

Intel has already cut its Q1 sales outlook, citing weak corporate demand and sluggish economies, particularly in Europe. The higher US dollar added to fewer hardware upgrades within the corporate sector, further fuelling the weaker projections.

The overall shift to mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets, particularly in emerging markets, will also bite into PC sales, IDC predicts.
