5G Smartphone Shipments To Overtake 4G In 2022

5G smartphones are set to overtake 4G ones in the marketplace by next year, according to new figures from Canalys.

Worldwide shipments of 5G smartphones will reach 610 million units this year, making up 43 per cent of total smartphones shipped. Next year, the figure will reach 52 per cent of smartphones as 5G.

The overall smartphone market will rise 12 per cent this year, after falling 7 per cent in 2020, due to pandemic-induced issues.

“The smartphone industry’s resilience is quite incredible,” said Canalys research manager Ben Stanton.

Stanton explains there is strong momentum behind 5G handsets.

“This will be driven by intense price competition between vendors, with many sacrificing other features, such as display or power, to accommodate 5G in the cheapest device possible.

“By the end of the year, 32% of all 5G devices shipped will have cost less than US$300. It is time for mass adoption.”
