4K Movie Downloads Now Available From Google Play

Google has added 4K movies for purchase on Google Play Movies, bringing more 4K content to the company’s recently released Chromecast Ultra and other compatible devices.

Over 125 movies are now available for purchase in the United States and Canada, with Google also offering a free 4K movie to new and existing Chromecast Ultra customers. Rentals are not currently available for 4K movies.

A compatible device is required to view 4K movies from Google Play Movies, including the Chromecast Ultra, Sony Bravia Android TVs and Xiaomi’s Mi Box 3.

The movies are encoded in the company’s VP9 video codec, which Google said allows customers to “enjoy them in the highest quality.”

Google plans to roll out 4K movies to Google Play Movies in other countries in the future.
