The rollout of the free Windows 11 upgrade starts today, but that doesn’t mean you can expect a notification in Windows Update just yet. Indeed, it may take a few months.
Microsoft say they are taking a “phased approach” to the upgrade, meaning it will take some time, though they insist this is to ensure everybody has the best experience possible.
Indeed, they’re using various tech angles to help figure out when to line up your PC. These include hardware eligibility, reliability metrics and how old it is, as well as what they’re calling “other factors that impact the upgrade experience”.
As such, the update will land on Surface devices and newer PCs first. As for other users, Microsoft officiallyt expect all eligible PCs to receive the update by mid-2022.
You can of course get it early manually by using Installation Assistant and the Media Creation tool, but Microsoft don’t recommend doing so.
